That was the river, this is the sea

That was the river, this is the sea. Last night when I got home I opened the post and found a beautiful print from @brittlegills my pal, swim pal and printing pal extraordinaire. I love it. The image is a favourite lake swimming spot and the print is just fabulous. I waited for some good daylight today, to share it on here.

Yesterday evening, I put on some music and started making dinner. Sometimes I select an artist or a song, and let Spotify shuffle me up a playlist. While I chopped and sautéed, and stirred and steamed in the kitchen, ‘This is the Sea’ by The Waterboys came on.

Listening to the lyrics, the second verse specifically, the sentiment knocked me slightly off my emotional kilter. Driving home from work an hour or two before, I heard a doctor talking on the radio, in response to the extreme circumstances currently faced by the NHS. She said something along the lines of… doctors and nurses can only try and treat the sick patients, the people who have the real power to change the amount of sickness and death, are the public.

She is right. Lockdown one, during springtime last year, was the river. This time, is the sea. And it’s stormy alright. But we will come out stronger swimmers, smoother sailors. Sharper navigators. Here’s that second verse. Hope is on the horizon, keep going 💙⚓️🌊

‘Now if you’re feelin’ weary. If you’ve been alone too long. Maybe you’ve been suffering from, a few too many plans that have gone wrong. And you’re trying to remember, how fine your life used to be. Running around, banging your drum, like it’s 1973. Well that was the river. This is the sea’ ~ Mike Scott, (The Waterboys)
